Panguni Uttiram is a festival
celebrating celestial marriages. Lord Shiva weds goddess Meenakshi (a Parvati
incarnation) on this date. Also celebrated is the marriage of Lord Subramanya to
Theivanai, the adopted daughter of Indra. It is celebrated over a ten day period
in many temples. Inscriptions indicate existence of these celebrations as early
as that of the Chola King Rajaraja Chola. Panguni Uttiram falls on the full moon
day in the month of 'Phalguna' called Panguni in Tamil (April). The day is
considered to be specially favourable for the worship of Shiva, Perumal and
Murugan.
